Nicole Barlow is the host of The NicoleB Show and widely regarded as South Africa’s leading female podcaster and op-ed writer.
She first rose to prominence after uncovering billions of Rands worth of corruption involving developers and officials within the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Since then, Nicole has played a pivotal role in exposing corruption and unlawful, environmentally destructive developments across the country. She has also specialised in investigating corruption within the fuel retail sector, most notably the case surrounding the BP Petrol Station on Rondebult Road in Boksburg, which continues operating illegally to this day.
In 2006, she made legal history by successfully defending the landmark case Petro Props (Pty) Ltd v Barlow and Another. Developers had sought an interdict and R6 million in damages in an attempt to silence her campaign against an illegally constructed fuel station on a protected wetland.
The High Court dismissed the case with costs, affirming that her actions constituted a legitimate exercise of democratic participation. Widely recognised as South Africa’s first SLAPP (Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation) suit, the case set a precedent that later influenced protections for activists in the Constitutional Court.
In the judgement delivered by High Court Judge Karel Tipp, he said of Nicole:
“All things being equal, Ms Barlow and the Association bear a standard that any vibrant democratic society would be glad to have raised in its midst. Their interest and motivation is selfless, being to contribute to environmental protection in the common good... In my view, conduct of that sort earns the support of our Constitution.”
In her memoir Fuelling Environmental Corruption, she recounts her 18-year battle to expose the corrupt nexus between government officials, including the late MEC of the former Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment (GDACE), and Petro Props, the developers behind the illegal BP filling station.
Dubbed the “Brockovich of Boksburg” by the Mail & Guardian, Barlow reveals a chilling web of collusion involving bribery, backroom deals, judicial intimidation, arson, and even murder. The book stands as both an exposé and a testament to the personal cost of challenging entrenched power.
Her second book, Hani’s Assassin, reexamines the 1993 murder of Chris Hani, suggesting it was not merely an act of racial extremism but part of a wider international conspiracy. Her investigation spans South Africa, the UK, and Poland, uncovering chilling insights into possible geopolitical forces behind the assassination.
Her fight against corruption also sharpened her curiosity about global struggles for democracy and justice. This drew her frequently to Poland, culminating in a rare and revealing interview with former Polish President Lech Wałęsa.
In today's media landscape, truth is too often buried beneath spin, headlines are written to protect the powerful, and uncomfortable questions go unasked.
I started this project because I believe journalism should do the opposite: it should challenge, investigate, and hold authority to account; however, independent journalism doesn't run on corporate advertisers or political party machines. It relies on readers who value free thinking and honest reporting. That means people like you.
